i have a really bad habit of looking at my phone late at night i watch endless videos and see people screaming about the exact same books over and over again everyone acts like every single popular book is a total masterpiece but my brain always wonders if they are actually good or if everyone is just following a huge fake trend

it got to the point where i was so tired of wondering that i just decided to buy all the biggest ones and see for myself i spent weeks reading stories about dragons and old hollywood stars and angry college kids just so i could finally know the real truth

some of these books completely blew my mind and i totally understand why the internet went wild for them but a few others left me feeling really confused about why people love them so much here is my totally honest breakdown of six huge viral books and my verdict on whether you should actually spend your money on them

Fantasy Romance Fast and dangerous Absolutely worth it

this book is absolutely everywhere right now it is about a girl named violet who goes to a brutal war college where she has to learn to ride dragons people die all the time and there is a very angry shadow guy who wants to kill her but maybe also wants to kiss her the internet went completely crazy for this and honestly i understand why it is not deep poetic literature but it feels exactly like watching a giant blockbuster action movie in your head the ending left me staring at my wall in shock and sometimes an incredibly fun escape is exactly what i need

my verdict is a huge yes this is pure entertainment and you will probably stay up all night reading it

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Taylor Jenkins Reid

Historical Fiction Glamorous and tragic Believe the hype

an old hollywood movie star decides to finally tell the actual truth about her glamorous and extremely messy life she had seven husbands over the years but the real story is about who she actually loved all along social media loves to cry over this book and i have to say they are completely right to do so the characters feel so incredibly real that i literally had to stop and google them to make sure they were not actual people from history the love story inside is beautiful and it broke my heart into a million pieces

my verdict is a thousand times yes this one deserves every single good thing people say about it online

Fantasy Romance Magical and dramatic Yes but wait for book two

you literally cannot open a book app without seeing someone talk about this fairy story a human girl hunts a wolf and gets dragged away to a dangerous magical land as punishment there is tons of magic and romance and huge drama i will be super honest with you the first book is just okay and i almost quit reading it but everyone online promises that the second book changes everything so i kept going and they were actually right the second book is incredible and completely hooks you in for the rest of the series

my verdict is yes but you have to push through the first book to get to the amazing stuff later

Literary Fiction Quiet and frustrating Maybe depends on you

this one is about connell and marianne who grow up in the exact same town and just keep finding their way back to each other over the years people on the internet either think this is the greatest thing ever written or they think it is totally boring i am somewhere right in the middle it is a very quiet story and the characters do not communicate their feelings well at all which made me want to scream at them but the writing itself is very beautiful and feels very raw and honest

my verdict is maybe you will love this if you like quiet stories about real life but you will hate it if you want a fast plot

Dark Academia Cold and mysterious Yes if you like slow books

this is the book that started the whole dark academia trend online it is about a group of very snobby college kids studying ancient greek who end up doing a terrible murder the crazy part is that you know who dies on the very first page the rest of the book explains why it happened it is very long and moves very slowly but the atmosphere is totally amazing you really feel like you are standing in the cold snow with them wearing a long heavy coat and hiding a giant dark secret from the world

my verdict is yes it is totally brilliant but you have to be ready to read something very slow and heavy

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow

Gabrielle Zevin

Contemporary Fiction Creative and emotional Absolutely yes

two childhood friends grow up and make video games together social media pushed this really hard as a love story but it is actually a story about deep friendship and working hard and creating art together i am not even a gamer at all but i simply could not put this down it made me feel so many strong things about how hard it is to stay close to someone when you both change so much over the years i thought about these characters for weeks after i finished reading the final chapter

my verdict is a huge yes this was probably the biggest and best surprise on my entire reading journey

💬 A Few Last Things

reading all these viral books taught me something really important the internet loves to exaggerate everything but sometimes they are actually yelling about something truly great you just have to figure out what kind of story you actually enjoy reading before you buy into the hype

if you want to turn off your brain and just have a crazy fun time i highly suggest reading the dragon book first if you want something that will make you feel deep emotions and cry on your couch then you definitely need to read the one about the hollywood star

the biggest lesson i learned is that it is totally okay to dislike a popular book you do not have to pretend to love something just because a million people on a screen told you it was perfect reading is supposed to be for you and nobody else
