The Booker Prize 2026 Longlist Arrives on July 28

The literary world's most anticipated summer moment is nearly here. The Booker Prize 2026 longlist, the famous "Booker Dozen" of 12 or 13 novels, will be announced at 2pm BST on Tuesday, July 28, through the Booker Prizes website and social channels.

The judges are considering the best long-form fiction written in English by writers of any nationality and published in the UK or Ireland between October 1, 2025 and September 30, 2026. From that longlist, a shortlist of six books follows on September 22, and the winner will be named on November 9, taking home £50,000. Each shortlisted author receives £2,500.

What makes this year's edition especially interesting is not the calendar. It is the jury. This panel mixes classical scholarship, poetry, criticism and Britpop in a way the prize has rarely attempted before.

⚖️ The most unusual jury in years

Mary Beard is best known as one of the world's most celebrated classicists, a scholar of ancient Rome who has spent decades making the distant past feel urgent. Handing her the chair of a contemporary fiction prize is a deliberate statement. The Booker Prize Foundation has noted that so much contemporary fiction draws on history and myth that a classical scholar is well placed to ask what a novel can do with the past.

Beard has been open about her own nerves, admitting that she is a fairly slow reader who will have to learn to speed up. Given that Booker judges typically read well over a hundred submissions, that honesty is refreshing.

Jarvis Cocker The Pulp frontman is also a former Faber editor-at-large who has interviewed Salman Rushdie, Edna O'Brien and Miranda July. His memoir Good Pop, Bad Pop proved his prose credentials.

Patricia Lockwood The American poet and novelist was shortlisted for the Booker in 2021 for No One Is Talking About This. She now sits on the other side of the table.

Raymond Antrobus and Rebecca Liu An award-winning poet and educator, and a journalist, editor and critic. Between them they bring an ear for language and a sharp sense of the contemporary scene.

📖 Why the longlist matters more than the winner

The November ceremony gets the headlines, but the longlist is where the Booker does its real work. Thirteen novels receive a sales lift, translation interest and a second life in bookshop displays. For debut writers and small presses, a longlisting can change a career overnight.

The longlist also sets the argument for the rest of the year. Which big names were snubbed? Which unknown novel came from nowhere? Which publisher placed three titles? Every reader builds a private shortlist the moment the Dozen is published, and half the pleasure of the prize is disagreeing with the judges.

Last year's prize went to David Szalay's Flesh, chosen unanimously after a six-hour discussion chaired by Roddy Doyle. Whoever wins on November 9 will inherit that momentum, but the conversation starts on July 28.

🔮 What to watch for on the day

Eligibility runs to the end of September, which means some longlisted titles may not even be published yet when the list appears. Expect a mix of spring releases that have already gathered reviews and autumn novels that most readers have never heard of.

Watch the balance of the list too. Recent Booker years have leaned toward quieter, formally controlled novels. With a poet, a lyricist and a critic on the panel, the 2026 list could reward books where the sentence-level writing carries the argument.

And watch the independents. The Booker has repeatedly shown that small presses can outmanoeuvre the conglomerates when a jury reads without regard for marketing budgets. If this panel is as independent-minded as its members suggest, July 28 could be a very good day for small publishing.
