IN CINEMAS OCTOBER 2: Amazon MGM Studios releases the R-rated adaptation of Colleen Hoover's psychological thriller.
There is something particularly unsettling about reading a story in which the person holding the evidence is also the person telling it. That was the trick at the heart of Colleen Hoover's Verity, and it is now making the jump from page to screen.
Amazon MGM Studios has released the film in cinemas on October 2, 2026, with Dakota Johnson playing struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, Anne Hathaway taking the title role of bestselling author Verity Crawford, and Josh Hartnett appearing as Verity's husband, Jeremy. Michael Showalter directs the adaptation, whose screenplay is credited to Nick Antosca. What began as a self-published novel in 2018 has become a major theatrical release eight years later. Amazon MGM Studios confirms the date, cast and premise.
It is a rather fitting transformation for this book. Verity is, after all, about writers, manuscripts, and the dangerous temptation to treat something written on a page as the whole truth. The film has to make that uncertainty work in a more immediate medium, where every glance and silence can appear to give a secret away.

π The story: a dream assignment that turns into something else
Lowen Ashleigh is hardly in a position to turn down an extraordinary writing job. Her career is struggling when Jeremy Crawford approaches her with an offer: finish the remaining books in the successful series written by his wife, Verity, who has been left unable to continue her work after an accident. The assignment brings Lowen to the Crawford home, where she begins sorting through the author's drafts and notes.
Then she finds a manuscript that appears to contain Verity's private account of her life. What Lowen reads is deeply disturbing, particularly in relation to the family whose home she has entered. At the same time, her connection with Jeremy becomes harder to keep separate from the job she was hired to do.
That is as far as a spoiler-free introduction ought to go. The hook isn't simply whether a secret will be uncovered. It is whether Lowen is interpreting what she has found correctly in the first place. Grand Central Publishing's book synopsis and the studio's film description both centre that uncertainty.

Content note: The movie carries a US R rating for sexual content, language, bloody images, some nudity and violence. Its story also deals with disturbing family material and bereavement. This report avoids revealing the book or film's major twists.
π Three actors at the centre of a very uncomfortable triangle
The central casting has a built-in tension. Johnson's Lowen is the outsider: she comes to the house for work but gradually becomes entangled in a life that is not hers. Hathaway plays Verity, a successful novelist who remains an overwhelming presence in the story even when she is not the one directing the conversation. Hartnett plays Jeremy, whose offer brings Lowen into the house and whose relationship with her complicates everything she learns.
These are not straightforward parts to translate from the novel. So much of the original tension comes from Lowen reading, noticing and second-guessing. A film must give the viewer something to look at without deciding too quickly which character deserves to be believed.
Dakota Johnson β Lowen Ashleigh. A financially struggling writer hired to step into another novelist's successful series.
Anne Hathaway β Verity Crawford. The bestselling author whose presence, history and apparent private writing dominate the mystery.
Josh Hartnett β Jeremy Crawford. Verity's husband, who recruits Lowen and becomes part of the story's increasingly uneasy personal entanglement.
Showalter previously directed Hathaway in The Idea of You. Here the creative team moves into darker territory: a psychological thriller built around desire, interpretation and the gap between the person someone appears to be and the version of them found on a page. Hoover and Hathaway are among the film's producers. Associated Press reported on the cast and the adaptation ahead of release.
ποΈ From an independently published book to a cinema release
Before the film deal and the red carpets, Verity had a less conventional start. Hoover originally self-published it in 2018, stepping away from the contemporary-romance territory many readers associated with her name. Grand Central Publishing acquired the novel in 2021. It later gained further editions, including a film tie-in paperback published in August 2026.
Its appeal sits in an awkward but effective mixture of genres. There is a writer's career dilemma, a charged relationship, a secluded home and a document that changes the meaning of what came before. The result reads like a domestic thriller that has borrowed the intimacy of a romance novel, only to turn that intimacy into a source of suspicion.
That history matters to the adaptation. This is not a new novel receiving a speculative film announcement. It is a book that readers have spent years recommending, arguing about and interpreting. Bringing it to cinemas also means bringing along an audience that already knows how difficult its questions can be. The publishing timeline was reported by Variety, while Hachette lists the movie tie-in edition.
The hardest part of adapting Verity is not showing what Lowen discovers. It is preserving the uneasy feeling that discovering something and understanding it are not necessarily the same thing.

π The book-to-film challenge: how do you show doubt?
On the page, Lowen's experience is closely tied to the material she reads. A chapter of a manuscript can change how she sees the people around her, and the reader shares that uncomfortable position: absorbing something apparently intimate without being able to cross-examine its author.
Cinema has different tools. It can put Verity in a room, frame a suspicious gesture, or allow an actor's expression to contradict another character's assumption. But it also has a problem the novel can delay more easily. The moment a camera visualises somebody's account, audiences may instinctively accept the image as an event rather than a claim. The distinction between what is shown and what can be trusted is the heart of the material.
Early reviews suggest the film remains recognisably close to Hoover's source material, though the screen version condenses and reshapes it. For readers who know the novel, the meaningful comparison is less likely to be a checklist of identical scenes than whether the adaptation retains its uncomfortable ambiguity. For newcomers, the best way to approach it is without an explanation of the ending beforehand. The Los Angeles Times review describes the screenplay as closely following the novel while making it more compact.
π° Early reviews: admiration for the atmosphere, disagreement over the twists
The first critical response has not been unanimous. In an October 1 review, Katie Walsh of the Los Angeles Times responded positively to the film's heightened, self-aware approach and the chemistry of its three leads. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian, reviewing the movie on September 30, was less persuaded by the way its later twists come together. Rotten Tomatoes' roundup similarly described the initial reactions as mixed, while identifying Hathaway's performance as a recurring talking point.
Those reviews are useful context, but they are not a substitute for an audience response after a full theatrical run. Nor is this article a first-hand film review. The interesting thing at launch is that the disagreement concerns exactly the part readers have long discussed about Verity: how far its more extreme turns should be taken seriously, and how much of the experience depends on accepting an unreliable perspective.
What some critics appreciated
Its lush, heightened style, the lead performances and a film that embraces the novel's deliberately uncomfortable thriller premise. The Los Angeles Times is among the more favourable early responses.
What other critics questioned
Whether the twists and characters hold together when translated from the novel into a feature film. The Guardian offered a more critical assessment of its later developments.

ποΈ Where to watch it β and what comes after the cinema release
Verity is launching in cinemas, rather than arriving as a same-day streaming title. Amazon MGM Studios lists October 2 as its worldwide theatrical release date. Availability and showtimes will vary by territory and cinema, so the local distributor or theatre listing is the practical place to check before planning a screening.
There is no confirmed streaming-premiere date in the official studio information checked for this report. Amazon MGM titles can make their way to home viewing following their theatrical run, but treating an estimated online date as an announcement would be premature. The studio's official film guide currently directs audiences to cinemas.
And Verity is part of a wider run of Hoover adaptations, alongside It Ends with Us (2024), Regretting You (2025) and Reminders of Him (released in March 2026). The new film changes the mood: instead of selling the story principally through romance or emotional reconciliation, it asks viewers to sit with a mystery in which affection and suspicion become difficult to separate. Release information for the other films is documented by Paramount and Universal.

π Why this release matters to readers
A film adaptation can give a bestselling book a second life, but it also changes how its story circulates. Someone who has never encountered Hoover's novel may meet Lowen and Verity for the first time in a cinema. Someone who read the book years ago may come back to the same manuscript with a completely different understanding of what it means.
That is what makes this particular release worth following on a literary site. It is more than an announcement about three recognisable actors. It is a test of how a story that relies on the private act of reading can operate when its secrets become images shared by an audience.
For now, the most useful advice is also the simplest: resist the ending explainers until you have experienced the story for yourself. Verity is built to make certainty feel a little dangerous.
