📝Epiloguely Editorial Review
Written and reviewed by Shadab Alam.
I knew the basic idea behind 'The Measure' before I started reading, but the book became more interesting once that premise stopped feeling like a clever thought experiment and started affecting ordinary lives.
Every adult receives a box containing a string that reveals how long they have left to live. It is a simple setup, almost suspiciously simple, but Nikki Erlick gets a lot out of it. The question is not just whether you would look at your string. It is what happens afterward. Would you marry someone whose string is much shorter than yours? Would an employer treat you differently? Should someone with a short string be allowed to hold political office, join the military, or make decisions that affect everyone else?
Those questions are where the book worked best for me.
I liked that the story follows several characters rather than building everything around one person. The strings begin changing relationships, careers, family decisions, and eventually politics.
