Reduced to a plot line, The Count of Monte Cristo sounds almost too neat. The tension between justice and revenge gives it more friction.
The emotional center becomes clear once the characters begin paying for justice, often through the prison section. Edmond's transformation from trusting sailor to controlled avenger is thrilling and increasingly disturbing. A cleaner, more admirable response to justice would have been much less interesting.
