developed. This is where I could see the author's plan around grace more clearly than the character's need.

I became most involved through the people caught in grace, especially around Valjean's acts of mercy. Valjean's moral growth gives the novel its heart, while Javert embodies the frightening belief that law and justice are identical. This is where my sympathy became complicated rather than automatic, because punishment carries a real cost.

The sections I enjoyed most involved Valjean's acts of mercy, Hugo's compassion for society's discarded people, and the meeting of private lives with history. Those sections find a rhythm that suits the book's interest in punishment.

The larger subject is grace, punishment, poverty, duty, revolution, and whether a person can become more than an imposed identity. I appreciated that grace is tied to money, family, work, and Valjean's acts of mercy rather than left as an abstract idea.

I also noticed how often grace appears through routine while punishment remains unspoken.

I can forgive the uneven parts because Valjean's acts of mercy gives grace a form I can still picture.
