I finished The Metamorphosis with mixed feelings. I know exactly what I admired in the deadpan opening, and where the handling of shame lost me.
Salesman Gregor Samsa wakes as a monstrous insect and discovers that his family's dependence can quickly become disgust and resentment. The same pressure returns through the deadpan opening, which makes labor feel lived rather than arranged.
