Pride and Prejudice — Book Review

Two hundred years old and it still moves faster than half the stuff on the new-release table. That surprised me. I went in braced for corsets and long-winded manners and got, instead, two clever people being completely wrong about each other for four hundred pages.

That's really the book. No rain-soaked confessions, no rescue. Just Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy misreading each other so thoroughly that watching them slowly correct course becomes the whole pleasure. Elizabeth carries it. She's quick, she's proud of being quick, and that pride is exactly what trips her up, she's so sure she's read Darcy right that she misses everything.

There's a scene I keep going back to: Darcy's first proposal, where he insults her family and her situation in the same breath as asking her to marry him, and she takes him apart for it. One of the great arguments in English fiction. Nobody's fully right. That's the point.

Austen is doing something sharper underneath the romance, too. Every "ten thousand a year," every ball, every calculated match is her showing how narrow a woman's options actually were. Charlotte Lucas marrying the insufferable Mr. Collins for security isn't a joke, it's the sensible move, and that's the horror of it.

The middle sags a bit. Mr. Collins is more caricature than person. And Lydia's storyline gets rushed when the rest is built so patiently. Still, I finished it with strong opinions about people who don't exist, which is the only review metric I really trust.
