The Seven Dials Mystery — Book Review

If you're expecting a quiet Hercule Poirot mystery where everyone sits in a drawing room, this isn't it. The Seven Dials Mystery is fast, funny, and honestly feels like an early 20th-century action movie. The star of the show is Lady "Bundle" Brent. She is easily one of my favorite Christie characters, she's smart, she drives fast cars, and she doesn't wait for the police to tell her what to do.

The plot is a bit wild. It involves secret meetings in the shady parts of London, mysterious masked figures, and a lot of political intrigue. What I loved about this one is the banter. The young "bright young things" of the 1920s are written with so much wit that I found myself laughing out loud at their dialogue.

One detail stayed with me after I finished The Seven Dials Mystery. Bundle Brent is a fantastic, modern (for the time) protagonist. The part of The Seven Dials Mystery that held it back was just as clear. The plot gets a little bit far-fetched towards the end. That mix in The Seven Dials Mystery left me with a more specific reaction than a simple recommendation would.

However, don't let the humor fool you. The mystery itself is actually quite complex. Christie is the queen of misdirection, and she uses the "thriller" elements to hide a very clever "whodunnit" right under your nose. The ending has a massive twist that I genuinely didn't see coming the first time I read it. It's a great mix of a spy thriller and a classic murder mystery. It's not as "heavy" as some of her other works. This makes it the perfect weekend read if you want something entertaining but still want to use your brain to solve the puzzle.
