Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets — Book Review

Book two is where the series stops being purely cozy. Philosopher's Stone was all wonder, look, magic, isn't this wonderful. Chamber of Secrets keeps the warmth but slides something colder underneath it, and re-reading it years later, that shift is the thing I notice most.

Structurally it's a detective story wearing a fantasy coat. Students are being petrified, nobody knows by what, and Harry and company spend the book chasing clues, brewing Polyjuice they absolutely should not, and breaking rules to protect people. Hogwarts feels different this time, there's a low hum of unease under the usual castle comfort.

Gilderoy Lockhart is a small stroke of genius, the fraudulent, fame-hungry blowhard everyone's met at least once, and he keeps things funny while the actual plot darkens. But Tom Riddle is where it grows up. A diary that writes back, that flatters and manipulates a lonely kid until it's steering her, that's a properly creepy idea, and it drags in the blood-purity themes that make the whole series more than a children's romp.

The Chamber finale is iconic for a reason: the basilisk, the memory of Riddle, Harry more or less alone. Peak middle-book storytelling, it keeps the childhood magic while whispering about the war coming later.

Couple of gripes. Some of the clues are obvious to an adult. And poor Ginny gets almost no agency, she's essentially a plot device this time out. But there's a flying car, so I'll forgive a lot.
